Once again I've said goodbye to Ollie who is now back in France. Although I've literally just returned from the US, I'm already planning my next journey. I don't know about you guys, but one of my absolute favorite activities while travelling has to be hiking. Apart from being a great exercise, this is in my opinion also the absolute best way to explore a new location. Below is a little overview of some of the scariest hikes in the world, for you thrill seeking ultimate hikers out there.

1. Mount Hua Shan, China

Named the World's Most Dangerous Trail, Mount Hua Shan definitely deserves to be mentioned on this list. Located near Xi'An, this trail was originally build by Buddhists and Daoists who were trying to reach the five peaks of the mountain. Since this trail has become more popular over the past year, some sections have been closed off, but some (like the one in the photo above) remain.

2. Rover’s Run Trail, Alaska

Into wildlife and not so much scary cliffs? Then Rover's Run Trail for you. This trail is scary for one thing - bears!

3. Huayna Picchu, Peru

Just behind the ruins of Machu Picchu you'll find the mountain Huayna Picchu, which involves climbing over 1,000 feet in less than a mile - and also a bunch of llamas.

4. Via Ferrata, Italy and Austria

Via Ferrata is a protected climbing route between Italy and Austria, mainly consisting of steel cables.

5. The Maze, Utah

Want to get away from civilisation for a few days? Then the Maze at Canyonlands might be for you. Just prepare yourself to be extremely dehydrated and exhausted - that even before reaching the Maze.

6. Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala

Starting in a rainforest and ending in rocky land, this trail allows you to get closer to an active volcano than you can dream of - you'll literally be walking on burning hot lava!

7. Cascade Saddle, New Zealand

11 miles of snow and slippery terrain calls for some seriously good hiking shoes!

8. Everest Base Camp, Nepal

The ultimate goal for the serious hiker has to be climbing Mount Everest. Being the world's highest mountain, this trail offers over 8,000 meters of ice, rocks, ridges, falling glaciers, and unfortunately also dead bodies along the way.

Have you completed any of these hikes or do you have any additions to the list?
