Winter is hands down my favorite season of the year. Not only because my birthday is during winter, but especially because winter seems to turn even the dullest places into the most amazing winter wonderlands. Although we have seen snow here In Amsterdam twice this year, it doesn’t wanna stay on the ground, so I cannot help myself from daydreaming about distant winter destinations. Here are my favorites from around the globe!
The Finnish Lapland is gorgeous all year round, but especially in the winter time. Although you don’t get to see much of the daylight, this is the best time and one of the best places to experience the Northern Lights. On top of that, the nature is gorgeous, you’ll get a chance to meet a reindeer, and you could even stay in an igloo for the night.
Since Ollie and I started dating, I have been visiting the French Alps every single winter. And I gotta admit that I never get tired of the beautiful views you get from the many skiing resorts in the area.
Yellowstone National Park, USA
The world’s first national park is a must see all year round with it’s impressive geysers, mudpots and hot springs, but in the winter months it is a little bit more special when the bisons migrate to lower grounds.
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Lake Bled in Slovenia is like straight out of a fairytale! Take a stroll around the lake and admire every angle of the beautiful Bled Island’s Church of the Assumption with the snow covered mountains in the background.
If you ever consider visiting China in the winter months, make sure to visit the city of Harbin in the North. Every January the city hosts the largest ice and snow sculpture festival in the world.
Tallinn’s old town is like a fairytale kingdom during the winter months. Get lots in the medieval streets and stop by a local café and get warm on a cup of glögi or some homemade soup.
Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japan
Jigokudani may not have the most impressive landscabe, but it certainly has the most unique residents. The park is famous for its hot springs and the snow monkeys who love getting warm in the hot steam.
Banff National Park, Canada
Banff National Park and its many lakes is worth visiting at any season, but it is especially worth visiting during the cold winter months. If you’re lucky, it might be cold enough for you to join the locals in some ice-skating on the lakes.
Tromsø is along with Lapland one of the best places to catch the Northern Lights in the world. But that is not the only thing you can do here. Go dogsledding, on whale safari or explore the cosy city of Tromsø.
Atlas Mountains, Morocco
Winter and snow may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Africa. But actually in Morocco, the Atlas Mountains are covered in snow from November through April, which makes a beautiful contrast to the hot deserts at the foot of the mountains.
What are the most beautiful winter destinations in your opinion?
